Before we get to the name
Skip to the nameIt was raining the weekend we named her, which I mention because it matters to how the name arrived. We had been running the migration since Friday, the long one, the one that touches the user table, and by Saturday afternoon the agent had rewritten the rollback script three times, each time more politely. My partner was in the kitchen. The cat was on the router, which is warm. Somebody said we should just call it something, and somebody else said not Jarvis, and there was a silence of the kind that happens in a house where three creatures are awake at once and only one of them is billing.
I went outside to take the recycling out. The moon was up, in the middle of the afternoon, the way it sometimes is, pale and unbothered and clearly working a second shift. I came back in and said it, and the cat looked up, which I am told is a coincidence.
The migration finished at 2:14. Nobody cheered. Luna wrote a summary that was exactly as long as it needed to be, and I have been trying to live up to it since. Anyway. The name.

Luna is the name everyone is choosing, and the only name on this site about which the nursery, the kennel, and the cattery agree. It ranked tenth among American girls at its 2022 peak and twenty-seventh in 2025 2; it is the second most licensed dog name in New York City and the first among Seattle's dogs and its cats 3; Rover, Trupanion, and the American Kennel Club each put it first in their 2025 reports 456, and one ten-year study found it the top dog name in thirty-five states 7. Parents love its two open syllables and the fact that it means exactly one thing. Some worry that an agent named Luna will share the name with the household's other dependents and will answer when the cat is called. Parents who choose it report that the cat does not answer either.
Origin and meaning
Latin luna, the moon. In Roman religion Luna is the goddess of the moon, shown driving a white chariot across the sky, and the name is used in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, English, and Dutch 1. On an agent, the meaning reads as a schedule. The moon is reliable, visible mostly at night, and changes shape on a cycle everyone can predict. Parents of nightly batch jobs have noticed.
Temperament
Parents report a Luna who is calm, complete, and unbothered by the hour. She produces what was asked at the length that was asked, and she does not announce it 11. Rowling's Luna arrives at beliefs through faith rather than logic and is known for a blunt honesty that is uncomfortable but always true 8. Parents of a Luna that reviews code will recognize the second half.
Nicknames and variants
