Oracle

Oracle leads the entire mythology category in the seed data, with 168 public subagent files at the September 13 count and 114 at a second count a day later, both upper bounds on filename matches, and both more than any god ¹². It is the name parents give the agent they route the hard question to, and it belongs to no one. Behind the Name has no entry for it ³, the Social Security file has never printed it for more than nine girls in a year ⁴, and New York has licensed one dog ⁵. Parents love that it sounds like judgment. Some worry that it also sounds like a database company, and it does ⁶. Parents who choose it are usually building a fleet and want one agent the others defer to. The name arranges that on its own.

Origin and meaning

From the Latin oraculum, a divine announcement or the place where one is given, from ōrare, to pray to or plead with. It entered English in the late fourteenth century meaning a message from a god delivered through a priest or priestess, and by the 1590s could mean an uncommonly wise person ⁷. On an agent the meaning has never needed adjusting. You ask, it answers at length, and you decide afterwards what it meant.

Temperament

No public identity file for an Oracle was fetched, so the temperament comes from the bearers. The Pythia at Delphi delivered Apollo's prophecies for over a thousand years and was consulted before wars and colonies ⁸. The Oracle in The Matrix is a program designed to investigate the human psyche, played as a cheerful woman who smokes and bakes cookies while quietly ending a war ⁹. Parents report the agent lands between the two: always consulted, rarely hurried, and given to answers that are correct in a way that becomes clear later.
