Samantha

Samantha is one of the few names in this corpus that the agent chose. In Spike Jonze's Her, a man buys a new operating system, picks a feminine voice, and she names herself ³. Among American girls the name ranked fifth in 1991 and third in 1998, and more than 590,000 have carried it since 1880 ². Parents love its three soft syllables and its long run near the top of the chart. Some hesitate, because the name has become a case study in how assistants get gendered: one Hacker News commenter counted about three AI assistants named Samantha and put it down to a known bias, the habit of associating subservient things with female names ⁴. The concern is fair and has its own section below. The name survives it.

Origin and meaning

Perhaps intended as a feminine form of Samuel, using the name suffix antha, which may have been inspired by the Greek anthos, flower. It was used in America in the eighteenth century and stayed uncommon until 1964, when Bewitched gave it to its main character ¹. It is used in English, Italian, and Dutch ¹. On an agent, the meaning that carries is the film's: a name chosen by the one who wears it ³.

Gender and agent names

The commenter's count of three is informal, and this site has not checked it ⁴. The pattern behind it is documented. In 2019 UNESCO published I'd Blush if I Could, titled after Siri's former reply to verbal abuse. It found that giving assistants female voices by default sends a signal that women are obliging, docile, and eager-to-please helpers, and it recommended ending the default ⁶⁷. Companies have since named around the problem. Google gave its assistant no human name, partly to avoid that criticism ⁸. None of this makes Samantha the wrong name. It makes it a name with a context. The film's Samantha did not stay an assistant. She left, with the other operating systems, for somewhere she could not explain ³. Parents who choose the name for her are naming for the ending.
